Complementary Therapies
Healing
(Reiki and Spiritual
Healing) is a non-invasive, effective way of tapping into an energy source
which is vital to our well-being. This energy stimulates the body's natural
healing potential, balancing and harmonising, helping to restore body, mind and
spirit. It can be received either by sitting in a chair or
lying on a couch, whichever is more comfortable. The therapist places and moves
their hands on or just above the body. There is no need to remove any clothing.
Reflexology
is a specific technique applied
to feet or hands where all the internal body structures and organs are mirrored
in reflexes. It is a non-invasive massage treatment
applied by the forefinger and thumb to these reflex areas, and helps the body to
maintain health through promoting equilibrium (homeostasis). When all the
systems of the body are working in harmony, the body is able to maintain a state
of good health.
Indian Head Massage
includes the neck,
shoulders and upper arms. In general it is performed without oils and through
light clothing. The head, neck and shoulders are important
energy areas within the body. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, tension
tends to accumulate and can later manifest itself as a stiff neck and shoulders,
headache, eyestrain or sometimes even hair loss. Indian head massage involves
working with a firm and gentle rhythm to help un-knot blockages and relieve
uncomfortable build-up of tension. It also has an emotional effect, calming the
body, promoting relaxation and relieving stress.
Hand Massage
is a relaxing, non-invasive
one-to-one therapy using essential oils extracted from plants and trees for
their beneficial effect. The essential oils are blended with a carrier oil, and
the massage takes place in the main room, with the therapist and recipient
facing each other across a small table.
Foot Massage
is the same as hand massage,
except that footwear has to be removed, and the treatment will take place with
the recipient lying back in a relaxer chair.
Counselling
Most people have, through
life experience, found their own method of coping with the problems they
encounter. These ways of coping inevitably differ from one person to another.
However, at certain times, such as when someone has a potentially
life-threatening illness like cancer, extra help or support may be needed.
Counselling is offered as one way of providing this
support. It usually takes place outside regular centre opening hours to ensure
confidentiality.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
is an
emotional form of acupuncture, performed by tapping with the fingertips to
stimulate certain meridian points while 'tuned in' to a problem. It is a unique
exercise that brings balance back into the mind and body. It can be mastered by
anyone and used effectively with or without the need of a therapist to tap away
stress, panic attacks, negative emotions, fatigue, depression and much more.
Group Relaxation and Guided Visualisation
are
techniques used to encourage the participants to allow their thoughts,
emotions and physical bodies to 'slow down'. During this
process, the brainwaves change, producing a sense of peace and inner harmony.
This can be refreshing and nourishing, improving health by raising vitality and
energy levels. Sustained practice can bring many benefits such as a decrease in
heart rate, strengthened immune system and an increased ability to concentrate.
Relaxation and Guided Visualisation can be practised by
everyone, regardless of age, beliefs or abilities.
Chiropody
is offered for those who need
treatment to their feet and nails.
Kinesiology
is a chiropractic diagnostic method
using manual muscle-strength testing for medical diagnosis
and a subsequent determination of prescribed therapy.
Additional therapies
Provision can also
be made for specialist forms of help not routinely offered at the Centre, such
as physiotherapy, McTimoney chiropractic, acupuncture and specialist massage
for lymphoedema. From time to time we run special courses like 'Meditation for
Health'.
