or have had, cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.
This support is also offered to their family, carers and friends.
What we offer
- A warm, friendly environment for people with cancer and their carers a place in which people with cancer can meet each other, discover that they are not in fact alone and can offer mutual support
- A caring environment, where the atmosphere is easy-going, friendly and almost tangibly kind
- Understanding and a listening ear
- The opportunity to meet others who have, or have had, a similar cancer, thereby encouraging self-help and mutual support
- Access to information about cancer and its treatment in order to limit the fear and anxiety caused by ignorance and misinformation. We do this through a well-stocked lending library, pamphlets, audio tapes and the Centre's newsletter Lifeline, which is produced three times a year
- Access to information on the internet via our computer in the main room
- A telephone help line when the Centre is not open, telephone callers are directed to the Centre Coordinator's home number
- Relaxation and visualisation sessions
- A wide range of complementary therapies. We do not claim that the therapies we offer will cure people, but believe that our self-help, holistic approach encourages the 'fighting spirit' that is so important in stimulating the body's own inner capacity to heal. For full details of the therapies we offer, please click here (new window or tab)
- We do not offer medical advice, but we do have a wealth of information to help people cope with their situation. We work to maintain links with the Wallace Centre and Arthur Rank and other organisations, and offer their information to our members
- We have an art group which is very popular with our members who have put on an art exhibition and sold postcards made from their work
- We have a lending library of books on art
- A craft session led by an experienced and enthusiastic helper takes place on Tuesdays
- Opportunities to go out for lunch/tea and on trips to places of interest to our members
- Parties which are thrown at the slightest excuse!
We are committed to making our services available to all those affected by cancer or other life-threatening illnesses, and their carers, regardless of their gender, race, nationality, class, religion, sexuality, age or mental or physical ability
